Following its colonisation in 1836, South Australian settlers lived under British common law which made women subordinate to men in that they were subject to their fathers, and then to their husbands. Their property, income and children were the legal property of their husbands. As the nineteenth century rolled on however, certain progressive legislative changes began to occur that separated women’s legal identity from this archaic system, such as the 1858 Matrimonial Causes Act that allowed divorce, and the Municipal Corporations Act of 1861 that allowed owner/occupiers of property (including women) to vote in local government elections.

Italian Business Women’s Network: new business network empowers Australian and Italian women

 

The female who’s who of the Italian business community gathered Wednesday evening 23 October for the launch of the Italian Business Women’s Network, hosted at Ferrari Brisbane. Attended by over 130 guests from across the Australian corporate sector, the glamourous Newstead showroom for Italy’s most iconic supercar, was a hive of networking and celebration. Founder of the Italian Business Women’s Network, Mariangela Stagnitti, said the launch of the Network was a project two years in the making. “From the very beginning in 2017 when I started workshopping the concept, everyone I spoke to was incredibly supportive, and saw a real need for an initiative like this.”

South Australia History Month: Australia Donna – Capturing women’s migration stories

The event was organised by the Australia Donna committee and was held at the Migration Museum, Adelaide South Australia, on the 11th May, 2019.

Following the welcome address by Mandy Paul, Director of the Migration Museum, Daniela Costa, President of Australia Donna, gave a brief overview of the rich tapestry of life stories, biographies, testimonies and original articles collected by the Australia Donna website in the span of 20 years.

At the centre of the event, were presentations by Giuliana Otmarich, Amalia Martini, Vera Ubaldi and Jordana Ubaldi who shared their and their mothers’ legacy, experiences of migration, and of the early days in Australia. More...

Australia Donna 20th Anniversary celebrations

On the 28th April, 2019, Australia Donna celebrated its 20th anniversary amongst friends and supporters in the splendid scenery of Sinclair Gully Winery.

Australia Donna paid homage to the many women for their generosity in sharing their stories and for enriching our collective history in Australia.

It was a successful celebration with the special performance of the Italian Folk Ensemble with traditional women’s songs of social struggle. The Ensemble has been researching and performing for over 40 years traditional and popular songs of the Italian people, from all Italian regions and through the ages.

Everyone enjoyed the gorgeous birthday cake, the roasted chestnuts, vin brule’ and delicacies kindly offered by local sponsors. More...
