Turning the pages of history, we learn that when the power of the intellect fails, we can always resort to violence, and always with the same results: the spoils of wars to the victors – and suffering for the vanquished. The oral history of Italy, indeed of the world, is filled with stories and songs about such senselessness.

These have come to us through the people left behind – the mothers, sweethearts and wives of those sent to the front. Some of the them have come to us, via those who experienced the futility of the trenches. They contain moments of deep compassion for fellow human beings; they also convey an inextinguishable yearning for peace. Through them, we will witness the growth in the social consciousness of those who have been asked to mindlessly kill, or take up causes that in reality did not belong to them, or in which they did not believe.

We want to sing about the experiences, the emotions, the broken promises and injustices ordinary people have endured, when those with power decide to go to war.
